What is iopBlogs?

iopBlogs is a number of XML (RSS and Atom) feed aggregators that allow readers to monitor feeds from different geographical locations, in one place.

What is RSS?

From XML.com: "RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, including major news sites like Wired, news-oriented community sites like Slashdot, and personal weblogs."

Who is iopBlogs run by?

iopBlogs is a project run by I'm On A Plane, I'm On A Plane started as a Blog and now runs a number of projects and blogs in different categories.

Why did I'm On A Plane Create iopBlogs?

I'm On A Plane started this project as an OPML of RSS feeds, and decided to take it out to the public and give them a chance to see what people from various places are saying.

How many feeds will you aggregate?

iopBlogs will have different aggregators for countries and if there is enough demand, states and cities, in the future.

So if you need to check feeds from the UK you would go to http://uk.iopblogs.com

Just add the name of the country instead of the www in the url.

How do I get my feed added to iopBlogs?

If you maintain a weblog that is written from or about a country or a city, and your site is syndicated through RSS or Atom feeds (almost all blogs are), we invite you to submit your site for inclusion in your country's aggregator on iopBlogs.

Why Can't I see an aggregator for my country/state/city?

We add an aggregator as soon as we get a certain number of blogs to participate in that particular country/state/city aggregator.
If we get a number of requests we will set up a hold page that displays the number of blogs remaining to create the aggregator so that you can encourage your friends to come and submit.
If the number is reached the aggregator is created.

Can I link to iopBlogs on my website?

Of course. if you want to link to the main page, please use the following URL:
http://www.iopblogs.com

If you want to link to an aggregator within, please verify the name of the country by trying the URL:
http://COUNTRYNAME.iopblogs.com and make sure it's running and then link to it.

Yes. See the aggregator's Downloads section for applications you can use to read that aggregator right from your desktop (without having to use a web browser).

How often is iopBlogs updated?

Most weblogs are checked for new content hourly, You can tell your aggregator to update itself after you make a new post by pinging the server. (See the ping instructions below.)

Can I notify / ping iopBlogs when I make a new post?

Yes. iopBlogs supports the Blogger ping API. Each feed uses a unique URL called a "ping URL" to tell iopBlogs that the feed contains one or more new posts. iopBlogs will then aggregate the new posts immediately as soon as the request is received.

How do I get my ping URL?

Send an email to support@iopblogs.com to request your ping URL. Be sure to include the URL of your website.

How do I set MovableType to automatically ping iopBlogs?

Log into your MovableType account.
Select Weblog Config from the menu on the left.
On the configuration page, select "preferences" from the top.
Scroll down to the "Publicity / Remote Interfaces / TrackBack" section.
Enter your Ping url in the section titled "When you update your blog, Movable Type will automatically notify the selected sites." Make sure that each URL is separated by a line return.
Save the settings.

You can find more information on setting up ping URLs by reading the MovableType documentation.

How do I set Blogger to automatically ping iopBlogs?

At this time, Blogger does not support automatically pinging sites after making a post is made. See below for information on how to manually ping iopBlogs.

The tool I use does not have built in support for pings. Can I still ping iopBlogs?

Yes. To ping iopBlogs manually, just type your site's URL into the manual ping form on the aggregator's main page.

I added an item to my feed, but it did not show up after pinging iopBlogs. What is wrong?

There are a number of reasons why your item may not have appeared:

Make sure that the new item was actually added to your RSS feed.
Make sure that there are no errors within your RSS feed. You can use the iopBlogs feed submission form to make sure iopBlogs is able to parse your feed.
iopBlogs may need to refresh its cache. Sometimes iopBlogs will cache post data for performance reasons. Try checking back again in a few minutes to see if the cache has been refreshed.

If your post still isn't appearing, and you feel that it should be, please report it to support@iopblogs.com.
